Muslin as a cultural force in the period 1790-1860
Muslin fabric is one of the best resources and a mysterious element of history and culture, where east and west were deeply involved more than four hundred years ago. As a native Bangladeshi, I am using my MA studies to investigate the influence and use of Muslin (mostly Dacca Muslin) in various historical ages, which has had a great impact on British museum collections, paintings, theatre, historical films, and all kinds of art. My objective in reproducing this day attire from 1869 (source: V&A Museum) was to sense the connection between British cultural legacy and actual Bangladeshi materials. My perspective reflects my emotional affinity to British costume and art. The day dress of 1869 elevated the trip of muslin from the Indian subcontinent (Past) to all over the world, leaving its mark on the garment and textile history of the late 17th to early 18th centuries. The day dress (1859) symbolises the beauty of cultural interaction.
